Strike due at EDF on 11th December, says CGT

28 Nov 2003 00:00:00

CGT, the largest union representing stateowned Electricite de France (EdF) and Gaz de France (GdF) plans a nationwide strike at the power utility on 11th December to protest against its partial privatisation.

CGT spokesman Eric Roulot said the strike was first planned at EdF’s distribution department in opposition to a restructuring plan, but it is likely to involve also the production and transport departments. The strike’s impact on production is still to be decided on Monday and Tuesday.

Communist-led CGT demands an alternative to privatisation: the merger of EdF and GdF, but also the protection of jobs and wages. A national strike involving the whole energy industry and organised by all the industry’s unions had been postponed from mid-December to early next year. VM
