ScottishPower completes Cruach Mhor windfarm

27 Feb 2004 00:00:00

Scottish Power has announced the completion of the 35-turbine Cruach Mhor windfarm in Argyll with the erection on Friday of the final unit, bringing 30 megawatts of green energy, or enough to power over 17,000 homes. The turbines were manufactured in Kintyre at the Vestas plant under a contract worth around £15 million for the local economy.

Speaking at the Scottish Renewables Forum, deputy enterprise minister Lewis Macdonald said: “The completion of Cruach Mhor is another important milestone in our drive to develop 40% of energy from

renewable sources by 2020, and demonstrates that meeting our environmental obligations can be done in a way which provides major economic benefits to local economies.”

The eight-month construction project has brought an estimated £15 million to the Argyll economy including the 850 KW turbines being manufactured by Campbeltown’s Vestas Celtic. It will now undergo a commissioning period before being officially opened in the early summer. CI
