UK suppliers on target for energy efficiency commitments - Ofgem
UK gas and electricity suppliers are on course to meet the government’s targets under the Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC), regulator Ofgem said on Thursday.
Since 2002 47 TWh of energy – enough to power 2 million homes per year – has been saved through 120 Ofgemapproved schemes set up by suppliers for their customers.
The EEC, established in April 2002 by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), requires gas and electricity suppliers with at least 15,000 domestic customers to meet a combined energy saving target of 62 TWh by 2005. This is equivalent to a 1% per annum (0.4 million tonnes of carbon) reduction in carbon emissions from households. The government aims to reduce carbon emissions from the domestic sector by 4.2 million tonnes per annum by 2010.
Publishing the second annual EEC report, Dr Boaz Moselle, Ofgem’s managing director for corporate strategy said: “Around 10 million customers…will benefit from these schemes. From a very encouraging start, suppliers have continued to make significant progress, so much so it seems likely that they will easily hit the EEC target by March 2005.” He added that the most popular energy efficiency measures had been cavity wall insulation and energy saving light bulbs.
