Electricity exchange EEX starts daily carbon index
As a forerunner to its plans to trade carbon dioxide emissions certificates from January 2005, German electricity bourse EEX will publish a Europe-wide reference price for emissions certificates from Monday, 25th October.
With several large counterparties already signed up to collaborate, the exchange intends to create a volumeweighted average and set the standard for a daily CO2 index. Companies will inform EEX of the trades they have executed; this information will be then collected and published around 16:00 BST.
“We see the index as a logical preparation of the trade in CO2 certificates which will commence at the beginning of the year 2005 and which we will operate over the same platform as the Spot Market for energy,” said Hans-Bernd Menzel, head of EEX.
Among the first companies to assist in the calculation of the index are Swiss EGL, German E.ON and RWE with Swedish-owned Vattenfall Europe and Dutch Essent. FF
