Germany’s wind capacity to rise 10% in 2005, but growth rate dropping
Germany’s wind power capacity is set to increase by 9-10% this year to total between 18,130 MW and 18,330 MW, three German wind energy groups said in a joint statement on Thursday. This is the third year that the growth rate has dropped however.
So far this year, 510 MW of wind turbines have been constructed, 30% less than last year for the same period. Due to fiscal considerations, two-thirds of new wind power capacity is normally installed in Germany in the latter half of the year.
The three wind groups DEWI, VDMA and BWE reported in their statement that the capacity, as of end June 2005, would be able to produce 31.5 TWh of wind-generated power, which in turn would meet 6% of Germany’s power requirements.
Enercon accounted for 45.95% of the new wind capacity, Vestas took 25.26%, GE Energy 8.52% and Nordex 8%.
Due to continued scarcity of onshore sites in Germany, coupled with delays for offshore wind park approvals, Germany is increasingly focusing on importing its wind power, currently representing 59% of total turnover.
