N. Ireland Phoenix increases prices by 14.5%

27 Sep 2006 00:00:00

Northern Ireland-based gas supplier Phoenix Natural Gas will be putting up its gas prices by 14.5% from 1st October, the company announced on Wednesday.

Phoenix Natural Gas said the increase was necessary “by the continuing volatility of wholesale energy prices”, but added “it has been widely reported that wholesale energy prices for the coming winter have fallen from record highs earlier this year…If prices fall further, Phoenix is committed to reflecting any reduced cost we pay for our gas in the end to our customers”.

This is the third price increase in less than a year for Phoenix. The company increased gas prices by 17.3% in January 2006 and by 30% in October 2005, according to the Office for the Regulation of Electricity and Gas (Ofreg).

In a statement, Phoenix added: “This is Phoenix’s final review before the opening up of the household market to competition in January 2007.”

Phoenix Natural Gas has over 98,000 domestic, industrial and commercial customers in the Greater Belfast area of Northern Ireland. The company was unavailable for comment on Wednesday. JE
