Italy’s Speia joins Belgium’s Zeebrugge hub to transit gas to Italian market
Speia, a gas and power sales subsidiary of Italian major Eni, is set to join the Belgian gas hub in Zeebrugge, the company confirmed on Wednesday. Speia plans to become active on the hub from 1st October, sourcing gas for its Italian home market as well as for trading on the border between Germany and Switzerland, Guiseppe Merli from Speia’s gas and power trading desk told Heren Energy.
“The goal is to transport gas volumes from Zeebrugge to the Italian territory, Merli said. “We have booked capacity with [Belgian gas TSO] Fluxys from Zeebrugge to Eynatten on the German border and then on to Walbach in Switzerland.”
Some volumes would be sold at Zeebrugge and some at Walbach, although most of it would be flowed into the Italian market, he said. The trading would take place from the company’s offices in Italy. At a later stage, Speia might set up offices in Vienna and Zeebrugge.
Speia is already active on the gas hubs in Italy, the PSV, Austria, the CEGH, and Germany, Area H run by Eon Gastransport. It has booked transport capacity within the French gas grid as well, flowing gas into Dunkirk, and is considering to become active on the French PEGs.
“We are participating in Fluxys’ open season to increase gas transit from Zeebrugge to Blaregnie on the French border as of 2011,” Merli said. The open season was launched earlier this year to gauge interest in new infrastructure on the congested interconnection, and forty companies are said to have expressed an interest (see ESGM 13.081).
