UK’s 1,000 MW Rugeley plant extended derogation until end of year

26 Sep 2008 00:00:00

International Power’s coal-fired 1,000 MW Rugeley plant has finally extended its derogation of the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD). The power station has been allocated a further 662 hours of operation until the end of December

“Rugeley was granted 702 hours from 28 March to the end of August 2008. This has subsequently been extended to 1,364 hours to 31 December 2008,” the Environment Agency, the England and Wales regulator of the European-wide directive, told ICIS Heren on Friday.

ICIS Heren reported in August that that the plant was delayed in fitting flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) kit to its chimneys, and said that work would not be complete until early 2009.

At the time, a spokeswoman for the plant said that Rugeley would operate within sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions regulations by using low sulphur coal and derogated hours from the Environment Agency.

Meanwhile, the two 500 MW units at the plant are both undergoing additional maintenance work due to the recent installation of upgraded turbines. Unit 7 is expected to return to service in late September, while Unit 6 is expected back online in early October. CA
