For the Record
Dutch gas exports at record level
The volume of gas exported from the Netherlands reached a new record high in 2008, at 58.5 billion cubic metres (Gm3), according to the country’s central bureau of statistics. Year on year, exports increased by 11%.
The rise is due to higher gas exports to Great Britain, Statistics Netherlands highlighted. In 2008, more than 9Gm3 of gas was exported through the BBL pipeline, up from just under 8Gm3 in 2007. Exports to Germany and Belgium also rose, after a decline in 2007 on account of extremely mild winter weather.
Total Dutch production in 2008 amounted to more than 80 Gm3 – up 11% year on year.
German gas prices set to fall
More than half of the gas suppliers in Germany will lower prices by 1 March or 1 April, according to a new survey by consumer portal Verivox on Tuesday. The cuts are to average 14%. But, even when the planned cuts are taken into account, prices in April will still be 6% higher year on year, Verivox said.
Among the companies cutting prices are large suppliers such as RWE, E.ON and EnBW, but also many smaller municipal utilities. Some of them already introduced a first round of price reductions at the beginning of this year or on 1 February.
