Cameron LNG begins commercial operations

31 Jul 2009 00:00:00

Sempra Energy’s Cameron LNG facility near Lake Charles began commercial operations this week. The commissioning cargoes for the facility sourced from Trinidad had arrived in June.

Commissioning activities and the final permitting processes were completed in July.

“With today’s announcement, our LNG business now has two fully operational North American receipt terminals with the unique ability to serve suppliers in both the Atlantic and Pacific markets,” said Donald Felsinger, CEO of Sempra Energy. “This is a business supported by long-term contracts that will provide shareholders with predictable cash flows well into the future.”

Italy’s Eni purchased 40% of terminal’s 1.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) capacity under a 20-year service agreement. Sempra LNG, the terminal operator, also concluded a flexible supply agreement with Qatar’s RasGas for purchase of up to 50 cargoes from 1 August 2009, through December 2010.

“We are proud of the milestones achieved at Cameron LNG, completing construction, successfully meeting performance standards and beginning commercial operations in time to support the recently announced agreement with RasGas and the existing capacity agreement with Eni,” said Darcel Hulse, president of Sempra LNG.

“We plan to expand on this success by continuing to negotiate with other parties interested in acquiring either long or short-term capacity at Cameron LNG.”

Sempra LNG’s also operates the Energía Costa Azul terminal in Baja California, Mexico.
