Endesa Ireland set to begin work on 450MW CCGT

30 Dec 2010 16:24:05

Spanish-owned utility Endesa has been granted planning permission by Ireland's An Bord Pleanala to construct a 450MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) in Tarbert, on the banks of the River Shannon.

Endesa Ireland was unable to confirm the news when contacted on Thursday, but An Bord Pleanala documents confirmed that permission had been granted to begin preparatory work on the site earlier this month.

The plant, which will be built in two phases, will replace an existing 590MW heavy fuel oil-fired plant, formerly owned by Irish incumbent ESB.

Phase 1, a 305MW open-cycle gas turbine, is due for completion by the end of 2012, Endesa Ireland said. Phase 2 will convert the plant to a CCGT, with a capacity upgrade to 450MW. Full completion is scheduled for 2016.
