E.ON to expand German pumped-storage electricity plant

23 Dec 2011 12:44:59 | edem

E.ON has received permission from authorities in the city of Kassel to expand the 440MW Waldeck 2 pumped-storage electricity station with a 300MW pump turbine.

The German utility said a final decision on the investment of around €250m will be made "in the summer or the third quarter" of next year. The plans for the power plant feature "an asynchronous generator on a scale unprecedented in a hydroelectric station", E.ON said.

If the decision is positive, construction works could start at the end of 2012, E.ON said. The earliest date for finishing the construction of the underground power station cavern with the pump turbine would be 2016.

E.ON also has the 140MW Waldeck 1 unit at the same site.
