Croatia will upgrade and modernise its largest hydroelectricity plant Zakucac, increasing its current capacity of 486MW by 52MW, Croatian state-owned utility HEP said on Tuesday.

The project is worth Croatian kuna 1bn (€133m) and is the biggest investment in Croatia's energy sector so far.

Work on the plant will start in April next year, with the first of the four production units at the plant replaced by the end of 2013. The rest are expected to be modified by the end of 2015, HEP said.

The upgrade is expected to increase the plant's annual production by 58GWh to 1,516GWh.
