EU sets two meetings to discuss ETS structural changes

Two consultation meetings on the possible options for structural changes to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) will be held in March and April, the European Commission said on Wednesday in a statement. But prices seemed to take little note from this latest attempt to address the oversupply in the market.
In the meetings, stakeholders will be able to examine the six options outlined in a Commission's 2012 report to tackle oversupply in the EU ETS (see EDCM 14 November 2012) on which there is an ongoing online consultation.
In the 1 March meeting, the Commission said it will also take stock of any additional options for possible discussion in the second meeting, provisionally scheduled for 19 April.
"The developments in the European carbon market since the turn of the year underline the need for moving forward the reflection on structural measures to address the supply-demand imbalance," said Jos Delbeke, director general of DG Climate Action.
Despite the statement, carbon prices proceeded to trade lower on the day. SM
