SUBSCRIBER NOTE: ICIS updates and adds to dark spread calculations
ICIS would like to notify EDEM subscribers of updates to its spark and dark spread calculations, and of planned additions.
The reason for the update is to bring the values used in the calculations closer to industry norms and to reflect independent authorities. Additional calculations are added to reflect increased efficiencies and changes in typical profiles for gas-fired plants. The changes will be effective from 19 August 2013.
The emissions intensity factor used to calculate clean dark spreads will be changed from a single figure of 0.971 to a calculation, using a carbon dioxide conversion factor of 0.34056 for net calorific value divided by the plant efficiency. For a 35% efficient coal plant, the formula will be (0.34056/0.35).This change clarifies the emissions conversion factor, and allows for additional efficiencies.
The conversion of coal costs from tonnes to MWh will be changed from 7.1 to 6.978, based on the energy content of CIF ARA coal at 6,000kCal/kg NAR (net as received) and converted to MWh using conversion factors from the International Energy Agency.
ICIS will publish dark spreads for an additional 38% coal plant efficiency in both the UK and Germany, and an additional 40% in Germany, to reflect increased efficiencies with newer generation coming online.
