China: Beijing ETS price and volume up ahead of compliance

21 Mar 2014 10:46:07 | edcm

Activity on the Beijing emissions trading system (ETS) rose over the past week, as compliance companies reported their emissions ahead of the deadline on Thursday 20 March.

Both the traded price and volumes of allowances climbed, information from the ETS exchange shows.

The price of 2013 Beijing allowances rose to CNY56-57/tonne (€6.50-60/tonne) this week, surpassing CNY52/tonne (€6.05/tonne) since the beginning of March.

The transaction volumes also rose in the Beijing pilot since the start of March, reaching an average of 1,000 tonnes of allowances per day.

Officials overseeing the trading platform received over 20 daily phone calls from local compliance companies regarding carbon trading in March. The figure shows rising trading interest, a local official said.

The Beijing scheme is already China’s second most active pilot, after launching in November of last year. Ling Ma
