Not sure if anyone knows too much about butanediol (BDO) but it is used in various industries, most notably auto but also used for Spandex, plastics, fibres and polyurethane production.
I wonder how far off this sugar-based option is from widespread applications but would be interested to hear people's thoughts.
Also check out the butanediol information we have for free on ICIS via chemical intelligence here http://www.icis.com/v2/chemicals/9075175/butanediol.html

I've interviewed Genomatica's CEO a couple of months ago and they said they are ready to do a demonstration plant next year. They are the only company I know right now that is developing sugar-based BDO. I'm sure there are others out there and I'll post them if I hear anything.

Truong,
New suppliers with cost-advantaged processes have come to BDO before, and failed. Oversupply was less harmful to the established players who waited out, and eventually bought out, the upstarts. So a newcomer must have both a very strong technology hand and deep pockets.
Here's a good ICB overview of the supply imbalance that was building in BDO in 2000:

The chart at the bottom lists two giant plants operated by Sisas, the upstart in this case; Sisas is no more.
i am not sure how to produce this one, but in Asia eapecialy in china there is lot of person start to produce 1,4-BDO from coal already.
