Why Sodium laureth sulfate (sulphate) in personal cleaning products

I've noticed in the UK that most personal cleaning products, shampoo, toothpaste etc have sodium laureth sulfate in them, why use this instead of some other sulphate?

Lots of good stuff there Boxy, but is it just cheaper than other detergents? Someone I once worked with reconed that "price overcomes many technical objections." Something that I've taken to heart.
