Was a phenol delivery involved in the fire in the channel tunnel last night as UK reports suggest? It is contradictory. The French police say it wasn't. ICIS Chemical Business has a story about transporting phenol across the UK this week. Should we transport chemicals by road?

Early press reports I heard suggested that the phenol tanker had something to do with the outbreak of the fire. From what I've since read, the phenol tanker was not the source, it just happened to be located close to the site of the fire. Interesting to read the quote from a spokesman for Arras Police saying that "it did not make the situation any more dangerous". Perhaps that's a reflection on just how safe the transportation of chemicals really is.
