I went to an open day yesterday, which was hosted by the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London - and sponsored by Germany's Bayer. The aim with the careers event was to explain to young people how science impacts our everyday lives... The morning was filled with seminars, with guest speakers covering subjects as diverse as making rockets to cooling

I went to a Bayer press event last week and chairman of the board, Werner Wenning, was hugely enthusiastic about encouraging more young people to join the industry. He was discussing the company's commitment to sustainability and we were joined by 50 young envoys - students that Bayer had selected from over 1300 applicants from around the world

What a great site - highlights plenty of examples of how science helps us and suggests plenty of job paths!

Here's another great initiative... The Appe's Xperimania education programme is back - and this time it's bringing its science ambassadors along for the ride! Selected schools across Europe will be visited by one of the new ambassadors between February-April 2010, allowing students aged between 10-20 years old to participate in various discussions

This site is great - it's split into different sections so that anyone from parents, teachers or students can access information and resources. I particularly like the Flash Bang experiments - designed to get children interested in science and chemistry. A fantastic idea!!! http://www.whynotchemeng.com/uk-and-ireland/teachers/top-ten-flash-bang

Check out this article in The Times newspaper .

True enough, Truong... but there's plenty on offer in the chemical sector... from working in labs to building production facilities, conducting research or even driving chemical trucks. And there's plenty of opportunity to work abroad too. The money's not bad... and job security is better than many other industries!

ICIS Chemical Business is planning a series of articles over the coming year for the Education and Recruitment Campaign. Along the way, we'll be talking to key figures in the chemical industry. Are there any questions you'd like us to ask? Perhaps you're not sure what a career in the chemical sector has to offer, need a work placement, or
