Established energy market intelligence provider, ICIS, delivered a presentation to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Energy Costs on the role of Ukraine as a transit country for Russian gas to Europe.
ICIS gas editor Katya Zapletnyuk featured alongside Patrick Heren, the founder of the Heren gas index and currently senior adviser to government on energy procurement.
The group, including MPs, energy consultants and other industry experts, focused on the historic and future position of Ukraine in transit of Russian gas and the impact of the current geopolitical crisis on energy security.
ICIS shared its knowledge of how Ukrainian transit works and its place alongside other pipelines transporting Russian gas to Europe, including Nord Stream. This 55 billion cubic metre pipeline was fully commissioned in October 2012 and takes Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
The presentation was followed by a debate where participants had a chance to ask questions regarding Russia-Ukraine relations in the gas sector and related issues, such as Ukraine’s imports of gas from Europe in reverse flow.
“By buying gas from European companies Ukraine is establishing itself as a participant in European gas markets. In May, Ukraine started publishing its storage data via a European storage transparency platform – which is key to European supply security in the winter. ICIS will continue to provide timely and independent analysis of Ukraine’s changing gas relations with Europe and Russia,” said Katya Zapletnyuk.
