The chlorinated solvents market in Europe is slowly recovering after two difficult consecutive years, reported trade group Euro Chlor in its annual chlorine report released in September.

"With nearly 158,000 tonnes in 2010, combined sales of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) and perchloroethylene (perc) were 10.4% higher than in 2009," said Euro Chlor.

Sales of methylene chloride in 2010 went up by 13.8% compared with the previous year while perc sales saw an increase of 2.7%.

The trichloroethylene sales report was discontinued because there was only one producer in Western Europe, the group said. The dry cleaning industry accounts for 43% of European perc demand, while 32% is used for metals cleaning, according to a European producer.

Methylene chloride is used in applications such as paint stripping, metal cleaning and finishing, pharmaceuticals, cellulose esters and photographic films.

As of October 3, ICIS assessed European methylene chloride prices at $850-1,000/tonne (€623-733/tonne) FOB (free on board) NWE (northwest Europe). Perc prices were at $2,000-2,150/tonne FOB NWE.
