Estonian government-backed utility Eesti Energia has begun construction of an oil shale-fired electricity plant in the northeastern part of the Baltic state.

The Auvere power plant will have an installed capacity of 300MW and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2015.

In contrast to existing oil shale-fired power plants in Estonia, Auvere is expected to be less emissions-intensive and will have the capacity to source up to 50% of its power from biofuels when it is complete.
