HOUSTON (ICIS)--Gevo has started up its second million-litre fermenter and GIFT separation system at its bio-based isobutanol plant in Luverne, Minnesota, the US-based renewable chemicals producer said on Thursday.

Gevo commissioned the plant in May 2012 and announced successful isobutanol production in July 2012.

“This serves to further validate our technology and plant know-how,” said Patrick Gruber, Gevo’s CEO.

“We plan to bring the final fermenters and GIFT system online at Luverne later this year, testing run rates, then ramping up production and sales over the balance of 2013 and in 2014,” he added.

Gevo’s isobutanol can be used as a building block to make jet fuel and chemical products in markets such as plastics and fibres, as well as solvents and coatings.
