SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s LG Chemical plans to start off-grade ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) production at its 140,000 tonne/year EVA plant at Daesan in end-September, with original grade EVA production expected by 9 October, a company official said on Tuesday.

The official said that the plant will mainly produce EVA grades with 15-40% vinyl acetate (VA) content.

“We will start up production at the plant with off-grade EVA with lower VA content at the end of September and on 9 October we plan to produce EVA with higher 15-18% VA content, although it will still be off-grade,” he said.

“We have to wait to increase the production of EVA with VA content of above 18%,” he said, adding that there was no change in the original schedule of achieving commercial production.

Depending on the VA content, EVA is used in the production of various products such as agricultural film, footwear soles, slippers, sandals, hot melt adhesives, wire and cable coatings as well as encapsulant film for solar panels.

LG Chemical also operates an existing 20,000 tonne/year EVA plant at the same site, which produces EVA with 12% VA content mainly for agricultural film applications for the local market only.

Major EVA producers in Asia include Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Corp (FPC) and USI Far East, South Korea’s Lotte Chemical Corp and Samsung Total, Japan’s Sumitomo Chemical, DuPont-Mitsui Polychemicals and Tosoh Corp, China’s BASF-YPC (BYC), Beijing Organic and DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers, Singapore’s The Polyolefin Co (Singapore) and Thailand’s TPI Polene.
