LONDON (ICIS)--Repsol is to halt its high density polyethylene (HDPE) production at Puertollano, Spain, it said in a statement, becoming the latest in a lengthening list of permanent non-profitable plants in the face of increasing low-cost capacity in the Middle East and the US.

The Spanish producer said it will be reorganising the site to increase the production of higher value-added products such as polyols and ethylene-vinyl acetate  (EVA) resins.

It also said it would be bring HDPE production at the site to a halt, due to the lack of profitability of the unit. The company will close the HDPE unit, which is thought to have a capacity of around 90,000 tonnes/year, in 2015.
