KARACHI (ICIS)--Saudi Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical Co (Petro Rabigh) has shut down the ethane cracker unit after a leak in the unit’s water pipes, the company said over the weekend.

“The ethane cracker unit has been stopped as a precaution following a leak in the water pipes on October 16,” the company said in a statement to the Saudi stock Exchange.

The company, a joint venture between Saudi Arabian Oil Co and Sumitomo Chemical, said the damaged part is currently being repaired and the unit will resume production after three days.

The shutdown will cost around Saudi riyal (SR) 81m ($21.6m) and the company will book its financial impact in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year, the statement said.

Petro Rabigh’s ethane cracker unit has seen several shut downs this year. In April it was closed for maintenance work and later in September due to a power outage.
