LONDON (ICIS)--Epoxy resins imports into the EU from the rest of the world in September 2013 rose 43% from the same period a year earlier, according to data from European statistics agency Eurostat this week.

Epichlorohydrin (ECH) imports into the EU rose 43% to 12,187 tonnes in September 2013 from 8,502 tonnes in September 2012. Exports of ECH outside of the EU, however, fell 7% to 13,317 tonnes in the same period.

Market sources indicated that the significant increase in EU imports stemmed from cheap Asian and Middle Eastern material, particularly from countries that pay no duty.

Sources said the rise in imports was exacerbated by favourable foreign exchange rates for importers, and by domestic European producers which sought to protect margins rather than competing with imports on a price basis

One source said it was "the big boys [large European producers] on the fence not reducing prices, seeing their markets erode. If they remained competitive with Asian producers, this wouldn’t have happened.".
