SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Ningxia Younglight Energy Chemical plans to start commercial production at its 450,000 tonne/year vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant at Yinchuan, Ningxia province, in March/April 2014 following a delay in trial operations, a company source said on Thursday.

The trial operations will now start in January instead of September 2013, the source added.

“Preparations are ongoing for the trial operations to start in January and commercial production will begin in March or April,” he said, adding that there had been delays in the mechanical completion of the plant as well as delays in securing certification and permits.

The carbide-based integrated plant in Ningxia province was initially scheduled to go on stream in the first quarter of 2013.

The company is expected to start up a downstream polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) plant and a 200,000 tonne/year 1,4-butanediol (BDO) plant at the same time.

Construction of the VAM and PVOH plants began in March 2011.

Apart from its captive consumption of VAM, the company will target the domestic markets of northwest Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and the southern China coastal markets, namely the vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) emulsions and adhesives industries.

Ningxia Younglight Energy Chemical is a subsidiary of Guodian Power Development Co, which is based in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of Yinchuan city.
