LONDON (ICIS)--Cyclohexane (CX) imports into the EU from the rest of the world saw a dramatic spike in October 2013 year on year, according to data from statistics agency Eurostat on Thursday.

EU imports rose from 3,628 tonnes in October 2012 to 25,774 tonnes in October 2013.

The sharp increase followed BP’s confirmation in September that it will close its CX plant in Lingen, Germany, at the end of 2013 because of poor profitability. The plant has a nameplate capacity of 260,000 tonnes/year and is the fourth-largest CX plant in Europe, according to ICIS plants and projects.

Coupled with this, Total announced in October that its final European sales contract for CX will expire on 31 December, completing its withdrawal from the European market. Total idled its 110,000 tonne/year CX plant in Antwerp, Belgium at the end of 2012.

Although year-on-year exports from the EU in October also saw a steep increase, the rise was from a low base and remains a fraction of import volumes.
