SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals Co (SSMC) expects to start up its 400,000 tonne/year phenol/acetone plant at Caojing in Shanghai in April 2014, a company source said on Friday.
SSMC has chosen to start up the plant in April next year mainly because of a feedstock issue, the source said, without providing further details.
Construction for the plant was completed on 18 December, the source added. The plant can produce 250,000 tonnes/year of phenol and 150,000 tonnes/year of acetone.
After this new phenol/acetone plant comes on stream, it will supply cargoes to its derivative 120,000 tonne/year bisphenol A (BPA) unit which is at the same site, the source said.
It was heard that SSMC would expand the BPA unit’s capacity by 150,000 tonnes/year to 270,000 tonnes/year either next year or later. However, this could not be confirmed with SSMC.
In related news, Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao Co will dismantle its 160,000 tonne/year phenol/acetone plant at Pudong in Shanghai in 2016, according to the source.
SSMC is a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals and Chinese state-owned petrochemical major Sinopec.
