LONDON (ICIS)--European producer Styron is increasing its styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) January prices by €50/tonne ($68/tonne), the company said on Tuesday.

The feedstock styrene January contract price increased €35/tonne, and acrylonitrile (ACN) is expected to increase following the €20/tonne rise in the January propylene contract price.

A SAN buyer said it expects January prices to increase, but does not yet know by how much.

“SAN prices could increase by €30-50/tonne, but nothing is fixed yet,” the buyer said.

Some SAN buyers had purchased material from South Korean providers prior to the Christmas holidays so are not in a hurry to start negotiations with European producers. Others are still returning from vacation and have not yet started discussions.

A second European ABS producer said last week it intends to increase its ABS prices by €50-60/tonne, more than the combined feedstock increases in styrene, ACN and butadiene (BD), which rose €10/tonne in January.

Both SAN and ABS price discussions continue.
