Eni’s Gela LDPE plant latest in line of Europe PE closures

LONDON (ICIS)--Eni’s 150,000 tonne/year low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant at Gela in Italy is the latest in a line of polyethylene (PE) closures in Europe, as older plants are brought down in the face of increased competition from low-cost imports, sources said on Friday.

The LDPE unit is said to have been down since August.

Several PE lines have already closed in 2013, and more are earmarked for closure in 2014 and 2015. Some sources are convinced that there will be more closures as Middle Eastern capacities are still coming on stream and shale gas expansion continues in north America.
