Japan December PS exports grow 74% on year; down 1% from November

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s exports of polystyrene (PS) in December 2013 increased by 74% year on year to 1,765 tonnes, official data from the Japan Styrene Industry Association (JSIA) showed on Tuesday.

The volume, however, represents a 1% decline from the previous month, according to the association.

Japan’s internal PS demand stood at 55,066 tonnes in December, down by 6% month on month, and also 5% lower from a year earlier, while production grew 18% to 61,596 tonnes from November, and up by 8% from December 2012, the data showed.

Domestic PS demand for packaging purposes declined by 7% year on year to 25,680 tonnes, while demand for electric and industrial applications was unchanged at 7,759 tonnes, based on the statistics.

Japan exported 103,646 tonnes of styrene monomer (SM) in December, up 1% month on month and 2% hgher year on year, according to JSIA.

Internal SM demand rose by 10% to 133,811 tonnes from the previous month, and up 13% from the year earlier.

December production of SM increased by 6% month on month to 239,606 tonnes, which represent a 4% increase from the same period in 2012, the data showed.
