SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Philippines DFE Chemical has shut its 30,000 tonne/year polystyrene (PS) facility I in Manila in the first week of February amid slower domestic demand and a shortage of feedstock styrene monomer (SM), a company source said on Thursday.
“Buying interest has slowed as buyers are expecting PS values to decrease in line with weaker SM numbers,” the source added.
At the same time, the company’s SM stock has dwindled in February and hence the decision to halt production temporarily.
The company expects to secure some SM for March delivery and will likely restart its PS operations if demand revives.
Other PS producers in southeast Asia include Denka and Total Petrochemical in Singapore, Petrochemical Malaysia, Dow Indonesia and the Siam-Dow Group in Thailand.
