SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s SP chemicals unexpectedly shut down its 300,000 tonne/year vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) unit in Jiangsu province on 20 February after some mechanical problems, a company source said on Friday.

The turnaround at the VCM unit may last for 5-10 days, the source said, adding that the supply of its VCM will be reduced sharply because of the shutdown.

At Present, SP Chemicals has a combined PVC capacity of 500,000 tonnes/year in Jiangsu, East China. The other 200,000 tonne/year VCM unit is currently running at full of capacity, the source said.

Offers for SP Chemicals’ VCM products were at CNY 6,650/tonne ($1,092/tonne) EXW (ex-works) on 21 February, according to the company.
