Ethylbenzene imports into EU up 80% in 2013 - Eurostat

LONDON (ICIS)--Imports of ethylbenzene (EB) into the EU were up by over 8,000 tonnes compared to the previous year, according to data from statistics agency Eurostat released this week.

December 2013 imports and exports were negligible in terms of overall volumes.

EB is a highly captive product that is used in the production of styrene, with the majority of EB/SM (styrene monomer) units integrated, meaning that little material moves between global regions.

However, 2013 saw several months when material was imported into the EU owing to weak benzene numbers and record high styrene prices, making EB/SM production economics attractive for suppliers.

Additionally, some production problems towards the end of 2013 saw one European styrene producer looking to source EB.
