HOUSTON (ICIS)--The US-based gas-to-liquids (GTL) Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) unit to be built at Ashtabula, Ohio, is progressing as planned, sources said on Monday.
Pinto GTL is developing multiple sites around North America to take advantage of low natural gas prices fostered by the shale gas revolution.
According to the company, by utilising new technologies encompassed within the advent of shale gas, GTL facilities can be built at a fraction of the cost of legacy plants.
Pinto is now focused on developing its first site at Ashtabula.
The plant is planned at 2,800 bbl/day total capacity and will take advantage of the Utica and Marcellus shale plays for its energy resources.
Of this capacity, sources say that 1,500-1,600 bbl/day will be waxy material of C20+ chain length. The waxy residue will be further processed into several F-T wax grades.
The plant will have the capability to produce value-added specialty products such as solvents, lubricants and waxes, along with transportation fuels.
With access to existing infrastructure in the region and an oxygen provider immediately nearby the plant, Pinto GTL sources said that the cost to move this plant ahead to production is practical.
Company sources said that financial elements are expected to be completed during the second, possibly third, quarter of 2014, with construction beginning shortly thereafter.
