HOUSTON (ICIS)--North American titanium dioxide (TiO2) exports in January were up 9%, to 52,154 tonnes, compared with 47,972 tonnes in the same month of 2013, according to data made available Monday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Soft demand, ample inventories and uncertainty about spring 2014 demand for US architectural coatings continue to push producers to seek out overseas customers, while imports remained virtually flat, the ITC data confirmed.

Belgium was the primary destination for TiO2 exports, getting 31% of the total volume shipped. Canada, Mexico, Korea and China rounded out the top five US export markets.

Imports were up less than 1%, with 11,966 tonnes imported in January 2014 versus 11,955 tonnes received in the same month last year.

North American TiO2 producers include DuPont, Cristal, Kronos, Tronox and Huntsman.
