SINGAPORE (ICIS) --China’s Guangdong Nanfang Soda Ash Industrial plans to shut its 600,000 tonne/year soda ash plant in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, on 30 March for annual maintenance, sources close to the company said on Wednesday.

Sources added that the maintenance is expected to last one week and operations are expected to restart over the weekend of 4-6 April.

The plant can produce 150,000 tonnes/year of light-grade soda ash and 450,000 tonnes/year of dense-grade soda ash, and it is currently running at a reduced 30% capacity this week ahead of the maintenance shutdown, down from the previous week’s 100% capacity output.

Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.
