SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Malaysia's PETRONAS Chemical Group (PCG) plans to shut its 660,000 tonne/year No 1 methanol plant in Labuan for a turnaround in the third quarter, a company source said on Friday.

“There was no specific date firmed up for the turnaround or the duration of the turnaround,” the source said, adding that it should just be “regular maintenance”.

The company’s No 1 plant and its 1.7m tonne/year No 2 methanol plant at the same site are currently running at above 90%, according to the source.

Methanol is used to manufacture formaldehyde, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), methylamines, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acetic acid.
