HOUSTON (ICIS)--North American titanium dioxide (TiO2) exports increased in February by 18% from one year ago, but that gain in volume was somewhat offset by a small increase in imports, with sources suggesting on Thursday that although domestic conditions are better, recovery remains elusive.

According to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC), TiO2 exports totalled 51,591 tonnes in February, compared with 43,890 tonnes shipped out one year ago. Belgium took more than 28% of the month’s volume at 14,695 tonnes, with Mexico, Canada and Korea taking 6,044 tonnes, 5,544 tonnes and 4,777 tonnes, respectively.

Soft but slowly-rising demand within the US market continues even though harsh winter weather has delayed typical pre-spring paint build.

Imports totalled 15,232 tonnes in February versus 12,286 tonnes one year ago, an increase of 24%. Material came principally from Germany, with 4,631 tonnes, followed by Canada with 2,935, and China at 2,720 tonnes.

North American TiO2 producers include DuPont, Cristal, Kronos, Tronox and Huntsman.
