US Williams mulls greenfield HOUSTON (ICIS)--Williams is looking at a possible grassroots cracker project at its production site in Geismar, Louisiana, the CEO of the US-based midstream energy and petrochemicals company said on Thursday.

Alan Armstrong said that Williams is trying to assess if there is market interest in a large cost-advantaged greenfield cracker at Geismar.

Williams would undertake the project – dubbed "Geismar 2" – in a joint venture with one or two partners, Armstrong told analysts during the company’s first-quarter earnings call.

He added that Williams’ existing cracker at Geismar has been expanded to about as big as it can be expanded.

Geismar 2 would add to a long list of planned petrochemical projects on the US Gulf Coast.

Meanwhile, Williams continues to rebuild, turnaround and expand the existing Geismar olefins plant, which is expected to begin start-up in the latter half of June 2014, the company said. The expansion will increase the ethylene production capacity by 600m pounds/year to a total capacity of 1.95bn pounds/year (885,000 tonnes/year).

The plant has been down since a 13 June 2013 explosion that killed two people and injured 80. It was in the midst of a turnaround at the time of the accident.
