LONDON (ICIS)--The number of new cars registered in Germany in April fell 3.6% year over year to 274,097 a government agency said on Tuesday.

Compared with March 2014, registrations were down 7.5% the Kraftfahrtzeug-Bundesamt (KBA) said.

For the first four months of the year, registrations were up 2.9% year over year to 985,850.

Diesel-powered cars accounted for 48.0% of registrations in April and gasoline cars for 50.5%, with hybrids, electric and natural gas-powered cars making up the remainder.

Germany’s Volkswagen remained market leader with a 22.1% share of registrations in April, despite seeing a 4.9% year over year decline in its April new-car sales.

New-car sales are an important market indicator for many chemical products and polymers, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), nylon, as well as styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) for tyre production.
