US melamine imports up in March - ITC

HOUSTON (ICIS) -- US imports of melamine totaled 3,851 tonnes in March 2014, up 24.8% from February and 43.2% year-over-year, according to data available on Friday from the International Trade Commission (ITC). However, US melamine exports declined in March.

Of the imported material, 1,640 tonnes came from Trinidad, where melamine is produced by Methanol Holdings Trinidad Ltd. (MHTL). MHTL’s output to the US in March was up 12.3% from February and down 13.2% from March 2013.

Another 1,040 tonnes was imported from the Netherlands, up by 10.6% and 136.4% from February 2014 and March 2013, respectively. Melamine is made in the Netherlands by OCI Nitrogen.

Further volumes include 605 tonnes from Germany, 552 tonnes from China, 13 tonnes from Japan and 3 tonnes from France.

ITC data shows US melamine exports went down to 1,640 tonnes in March, a drop of 38% from February and 26.4% from March 2013. The only melamine producer with a plant in the US is Cornerstone Chemical, which has a facility in Waggaman, Louisiana.

March exports included 568 tonnes to Canada, 480 tonnes to the United Kingdom, 400 tonnes to Germany, 60 tonnes each to Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, 9 tonnes to Mexico and 3 tonnes to Belgium.
