US exports of 2-EH fall in March

HOUSTON (ICIS) -- US exports of oxo-alcohol 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) fell to 3,551 tonnes in March, according to data released Friday from the International Trade Commission (ITC).

March 2014 exports were down 16.6% from February and 59.4% from March 2013.

Of the 3,551 tonnes exported, 1,308 tonnes went to Canada, 1,049 tonnes to Venezuela and 1,000 tonnes to Taiwan.

Currently, the only producers of 2-EH in the US are BASF and Eastman Chemical. The oxo-alcohol is used in the manufacturing of plasticizers, coatings and solvents.

Imported 2-EH totaled 5,503 tonnes in March, up 21.3% from February 2013 and 70.4% from March 2013. Of this, 5,000 tonnes came from Germany, where 2-EH is made by Oxea. Another 389 tonnes came from Elekeiroz in Brazil and 114 tonnes were imported from South Korea. Korean producers of 2-EH include LG Chem and Hanwha Chemical.
