SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwan’s Formosa Petrochemical Corp (FPCC) is on track to shut its methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) unit at Mailiao in early June for turnaround, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.

The plant, which has a nameplate capacity of 190,000 tonnes/year of MTBE, will be shut for a month until the end of June, the source said.

The exact date, however, has not yet been confirmed, the source added.

The plant is currently operating at 100%, the source said, adding that the company will gradually cut the run rate of the plant in the last week of May before the shutdown.

A separate MTBE unit, owned by Formosa Plastics Corp (FPC) and with a yearly capacity of around 140,000 tonnes, will also be on turnaround at the same time, according to the source.

Market participants said that the shutdown is unlikely to have a large impact on the spot market as the company is largely covered under contractual requirements. However, there would be no sell tenders issued by the company in June, the source said.
