JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (ICIS)--An increasing affluent global population will provide further growth opportunities for surfactants producers in the future, the president and CEO of Stepan said on Thursday.
Quinn Stepan Jr said that the number of people globally living in cities will increase from 45% of the population today to 60% by 2040, with the world’s population of 7bn people growing to 9bn in that period.
“As incomes rises people want to live in a clean environment … to look and to feel attractive … leading to more consumption of detergents and personal care products,” Stepan said in his keynote paper at the 4th ICIS World Surfactants Conference.
Stepan pointed to opportunities for businesses in emerging economies such as Brazil, where surfactants usage continues to grow due to a transition from traditional soap to body washes.
The ICIS World Surfactants Conference takes place through Friday in Jersey City, New Jersey.
