JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (ICIS)--Brazil and Mexico are leading the way in Latin America’s growing surfactant market, a consultant said at the 4th ICIS World Surfactants Conference.

A Frost & Sullivan consultant said that Brazil is the third largest personal care market in the world and is the fourth-ranked globally in the home care sector.

Mexico is number 10 in global home care product consumption and is also active in exporting finished surfactant products.

Latin America tends to use a different array of surfactant types, with higher bar soap use than liquid detergents, the consultant said.

As emerging economies in the region continue to experience a growing middle class, the home cleaning and personal care surfactant sectors are moving towards more use of similar detergent and personal care products as those used in the US and Europe, the consultant said.

Mexico is part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), joining with the US and Canada for regional trade flow, but is often also included with South American giant Brazil for many discussions concerning Latin America.

The ICIS World Surfactants Conference ends on Friday in Jersey City, New Jersey.
