US melamine exports, imports up in April

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US imports and exports of melamine both increased year-over-year in April 2014, according to data made available this week from the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Melamine imports to the US were 3,334 tonnes in April, over twice the amount imported in April 2013, but down 13% from March 2014.

China was the largest source of this melamine, with 1,236 tonnes imported in April. The US imported 960 tonnes from Trinidad, where melamine is produced by Methanol Holdings Trinidad Ltd. (MHTL).

Other sources of melamine for the US market in April were 612 tonnes from the Netherlands and 526 tonnes from Germany. OCI produces melamine in the Netherlands, while Borealis Agrolinz and BASF have facilities in Germany.

US exports of melamine reached 2,389 tonnes in April, a jump of 24% from April 2013 and 46% from March 2014. The only US melamine producer is Cornerstone Chemical, which has a plant in Waggaman, Louisiana.

In April, the US exported 660 tonnes to Germany, 487 tonnes to Canada, 320 tonnes to the United Kingdom, 300 tonnes to Belgum and 200 tonnes each to Romania and Italy.
